Academic exellence

Students from all backgrounds, countries, religions and cultures study at Wesley because of its excellent educational reputation, facilities and student support.

In 2012, our students achieved impressive results in both the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB DP), recording a median ATAR score of 86.25. Some 40 per cent of all VCE and IB Diploma students achieved an ATAR greater than 90.00, and 155 perfect scores were achieved across 32 IB Diploma and VCE subjects. Of those studying the IB DP, a median ATAR of 94.85 was achieved, with 44 per cent achieving an ATAR greater than 95.00. The majority of students were offered a place at either the University of Melbourne or Monash University.

Many graduates from the college continue their studies at major Australian universities and others choose international universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard.

Curriculum

Wesley College offers a broad curriculum, a balanced approach to learning, a concern for the whole student and a rich range of opportunities for all young people to know, to do, to live with and to be, within an innovative and caring environment.

The curriculum for Early Childhood to Year 6 is based on the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Programme (PYP). Teaching and learning in our middle years offers children in Years 7 to 9 a broadbased curriculum that prepares them for the breadth of choices and the rigour of academic study in the senior years. The introduction of the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) curriculum framework (Wesley became a candidate school at the beginning of 2013) has further enhanced learning in the middle years at Wesley.

In Years 10, 11 and 12, a wide range of subject choices and approaches to learning are available from:

  • Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) — 44 subjects
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) —26 subjects
  • Vocational Education and Training (VET) —3 subjects

Opportunities at Wesley

Wesley offers a wide range of cocurricular programs to support students’ learning in music, performing and visual arts, sport and social services.

Our outstanding dramatic and musical productions are regular cultural highlights. Music at Wesley is focused on self expression and inspiration, and students are encouraged to join Wesley’s numerous bands and ensembles.

Our students have won countless awards for their inspired work — in debating, music, visual arts, drama and literary festivals, as well as in national academic competitions.

Sport is a compulsory cocurricular activity for students from Years 5 to 12, with a wide range of sport choices available throughout the year.

History

In its 147-year history, the college has produced many outstanding alumni, including:

  • two former Australian Prime Ministers
  • 21 politicians
  • 13 Rhodes Scholars
  • five current Supreme Court judges
  • 33 Olympic athletes
  • a multitude of prominent scientists, teachers, artists and business leaders.
